Geotextile Fabric for Groundwork – How to Choose and Use the Right Fabric in Your Construction Project

When you start groundwork in a construction project, geotextile fabric is a small detail that makes a big difference for the entire structure’s lifespan. A properly chosen geotextile fabric provides stability, drainage, and separation between different material layers, reducing the risk of settling, moisture problems, and uneven surfaces.

In this guide, we cover why geotextile fabric is so important, the different types available, and how to install it correctly.

Why Geotextile Fabric Is Important in Groundwork

A good geotextile fabric does several things at once:

1. Separation

Geotextile fabric prevents soil, topsoil, and fine materials from mixing with base layers and gravel.
This prevents settling and keeps the foundation stable over time.

2. Filtration

The fabric allows water to pass through but stops finer particles.
This ensures the drainage layer functions properly – even during heavy rainfall.

3. Drainage

Geotextile fabric helps channel moisture away from the structure and keeps the foundation dry.

4. Reinforcement

The right fabric adds load-bearing capacity and stability to high-traffic surfaces such as:

-driveways

-parking areas

-carports

-walkways

-deck constructions
It reduces the risk of the surface sinking or deforming.

Which Geotextile Fabric Should You Choose?

Geotextile fabrics are often classified into grades (e.g., N1, N2, N3), where a higher number means greater strength.

For construction projects, where the ground often needs to support both structures and traffic, the recommendations are:

  • N2 – for normal loads (walkways, decks, smaller gravel areas)
  • N3 – for heavier loads (driveways, carports, foundations)

A stronger fabric holds its shape better and provides a significantly longer lifespan.

How to Install Geotextile Fabric Step by Step

  1. Remove topsoil and level the ground surface.
  2. Roll out the geotextile fabric over the entire area.
  3. Overlap seams by 30–50 cm to prevent material from penetrating through.
  4. Secure the fabric with ground stakes or by placing gravel on top.
  5. Add the base layer (gravel or crushed stone).
  6. Compact the layer thoroughly with a vibrating plate for optimal load-bearing capacity.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fabric too thin for loaded surfaces → leads to settling
  • Insufficient overlap → materials mix into the base layer
  • Poorly prepared base → uneven and unstable surface
  • Forgetting drainage → risk of standing water beneath the surface layer
